5 Towers Show Recap

Happy Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! What a way to ring in the holiday season with CityWalk's Holiday 2012 festivities. I had a blast last night performing for somewhere between 500 and 700 of my closest friends. The 5 Towers was ablaze with Christmas lights, 15 foot tall tin soldiers, giant gift boxes and THE INIMITABLES! I love my band (Kevin Jarvis, Evie Sands, Teresa Cowles & Adam Marsland). They were on point, even as temps dipped into the 50's; the crowd was equally energized and you all sang along beautifully. It's great to perform on CityWalk to see all of the different ages and faces that might not otherwise experience a club show. That aspect is really cool. Speaking of singing along; She's My Go-To continues to be a truly interactive joint. My favorite part of the show was digging into Your Majestic Rejection . If I could go back in time to be a part of a Motown Revue... I speak for the band when I tell you that the sound was dialed-in. No real surpris

Liverpool Sound & Vision Review of On The Rebound and More

It's the beginning of December and a big week here for me. I was feeling under the weather today. All this rain made it easy to nap this afternoon. That came in handy for being upright for a big Hollywood to-do tonight. Here's my news: 1. Check out the latest review of ON THE REBOUND from Liverpool Sound & Vision . It's no mistake that I have played as many shows in Liverpool the past 6 years as in Los Angeles. I left part of my heart Merseyside. 2. Please plan on joining me on Universal CityWalk for my concert on the 5 Towers Stage on 12/8/12 . It's going to be a blast and the proper way to start the holidays. It's free and will feature my full band. I will be followed by Juliet Simms from NBC's The Voice . 3. Grammy Award nominations will be announced on Wednesday in Nashville. I will be right here in Los Angeles watching the festivities on TV. Keep those positive vibes coming. There's always hope that yours truly will make the cut. Your Majest

Cinema Bar Recap and December 8 CityWalk News

Thanksgiving has just passed, but I'm still giving thanks. What a great night we had this month in the cozy confines of the Cinema Bar in Culver City, Nov. 15. The turnout was great and we danced the night away. Opener Sarah D. from Adelaide, Australia with her guitarist Ramon Blanco started the evening right with selections from her new EP and some covers (Karmin) that set the tone. They were a lot of fun. The Inimitables were in fine form. It is thrilling to play with Evie, Kevin, Teresa and Adam The set was pulsing and we played the entirety of ON THE REBOUND.  After rallying the room with Go-To and Rebound ; we pulled off an unrehearsed Bee Gees encore. Here's what we played So Sophisticated Saffron Dancer Your Majestic Rejection Supermodels With Gatling Guns Our Love Is Known By Name A Miracle Is On The Way* A Talent For Loving Huckleberry Finn Airport Kisses* She's My Go-To On The Rebound Encore: Staying Alive * = world premiere In other news, in

They saw my solo acoustic set at IPO Liverpool in May. Second, Almost FairyTale Films has produced a short spot featuring yours truly, talking mainly about Huckleberry Finn. Watch it on YouTube . More to come. Keep on dancing and spreading the good word about ON THE REBOUND! Stay cool. Love & Music

On The Rebound Is Number 59

Some news to start the new week! My record ON THE REBOUND is #59 right now on the iTunes new release chart ! It appears that it was as high as #47. I'm right ahead of Tori Amos and Paul Simon? What!? Well, thank you fans. Please continue to spread the good word about how much you enjoy this record. I'm very proud of it; and very grateful to you all for your support and patronage. Cause you can dance and look cute helps. The album also got a nod on the Earth, Wind & Fire Fansite due to the participation and collaboration of EW&F trumpeter Rahmlee Michael Davis. His amazing, trademark trumpeting is on a number of key tracks, including So Sophisticated , She's My Go-To and the lead single Your Majestic Rejection . Too smooth. What can I say? Thank you! More news to come. And mark your calendars for that Thursday, Nov. 15 date at Cinema Bar. It will be wild. xo

On The Rebound Extravaganza Recap

Last night at the Federal Bar, the jump-off began for ON THE REBOUND. There was a great crowd and a great vibe. The band was introduced by our guest DJ, Richard Blade  who spun the most amazing 80's set before and after. I have to express a lot of gratitude to the amazing musicians, the Inimitables as I call them, for their support. They allowed me to get unhinged. It helped that we were all in our 80s age of excess and extravagance styles. What an honor to share the stage with them and to share a lead vocal with Evie Sands on a classic Sam & Dave tune. The lineup: Adam Marsland (keyboards, guitar & vocals) Teresa Cowles (bass, vocals) Kevin Jarvis (drums) and the singular and legendary Evie Sands (lead guitar, vocals and co-lead on Hold On, I'm Coming ) It was great having DJ Bonebrake (drums), Larry O. Williams (saxophone), and Bryan Farrar (guitar) in the house; even though they did not play. They all contributed a lot to the album. The show featured the wo

On The Rebound Gets A Cover and a Date

Good morning! The album gets a cover. Here it is. The finished cover for ON THE REBOUND. The photo was taken by Adam Hendershott. Hair and makeup by Vio Meyners. A wonderful team that bring out the best in my visage. I'm thrilled at how timeless the picture looks. And having done the art direction for the CD, I can't say I am disappointed by the graphics. Some friends have already noted the Cleveland color scheme. That is certainly an influence. I like the Hollywood glamor, quasi-1930's Flash Gordon feel of the processing for the picture. Maybe it's my hair. Anyway, I hope that you will enjoy what is inside the album even more than the sleeve.  ON THE REBOUND will have its official release on Tuesday, October 2. But if you are in the Los Angeles area, save the date: Tuesday, September 25 . There will be a release show and party where you can get your advance copy. The event will be at the Federal Bar, 5303 Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood.  The show is F

New Digital 45 - On The Rebound Has Arrived

Feeling that 110 degrees already? Cool out: with my new single On The Rebound . With cues from Curtis Mayfield and Andy Gibb, this smooth track is salve a for your overheated heart. On The Rebound - Digital 45 Sleeve

Here's the digital sleeve for my new digital 45! On The Rebound is the title track from my upcoming album. The single will be available on line starting Tuesday, August 7. Be sure to warm up your computers, iPods, etc. You won't want to miss it. The track debuted on the International Pop Overthrow Festival CD that was released just last week (July 2012). It was co-written with Bryan Farrar and was recorded and produced by Adam Marsland at Karma Frog, Reseda, CA. The photo was taken by Adam Hendershott for Hendershotts Photography. Hair and makeup by Vio Meyners. I'm really pleased with how this looks and how the single sounds. You are going to love it, too! Friday night at Brennan's, I got to guest during Adam Marsland's Chaos Band's tribute to the Beach Boys in honor of the publication of the 50 Sides book. I sang a fairly obscure song called Aren't You Glad from WILD HONEY. It was a lot of fun. Then I took the high harmony on Hot Fun In The Summer

International Pop Overthrow L.A. And More [Show Recap]

Played a matinee show today at Fais Do Do for the International Pop Overthrow Festival L.A. This was the Festival's 15th run in Los Angeles. I was preceded by the outstanding and eclectic Fernando Perdomo of  Dreaming In Stereo .  Check out the free download of his track "Home." He closed the show with this Nilsson-esque number. I love it. Following Fernando was the Rebel Pebbles an all-ladies rock outfit from the 90's who have reunited. Fans of the Go Go's will dig them. It is always fun to play IPO and this year was no exception as the arrangements for each song got a fresh coat. I was accompanied by producer Adam Marsland on keyboard. I had my globetrotting guitar. The venue was quite warm - it is Los Angeles in midsummer - and welcoming. There was a really nice turnout as such. Since I've been leaning into soul territory, it is nice to get a good response from a wide-ranging audience. Special thanks to all my fans who were there and to David Bash for org

Your Majestic Rejection Is A Hit

For any independent artist, each release is a success. Each song is a hit. In this case, you have made my new single "Your Majestic Rejection" my biggest seller yet! In just 24 hours, no less. So happens, that as of 8:45 AM PST on July 4, I've had as many "hits" on the single as all day the first day. Must be the time difference and the global audience. Keep it going, fans, friends and family! This is just the beginning of the wonderful album that I made at Karma Frog with producer Adam Marsland the past 12 months. The track went up on Google Music today. Yet another platform for you all to check out.  Of course, iTunes and CD Baby are great options, too. The single should hit Amazon MP3 shortly. Thank you all for downloading, listening, supporting and telling your friends! Peace and Happy Birthday, America!

Your Majestic Rejection - Summer's Hot Slow Jam Released

The Wichita Lineman is Still on the Line

Just home from seeing Glen Campbell's farewell show at the Hollywood Bowl. It was very moving seeing the Rhinestone Cowboy for what will be my first and only time. His three kids paced him through a taught 60 minute show that featured a dozen hits, a few blazing solos and several stand-out tracks from his latest LP, Ghost on the Canvas . The opening act was country-rockers Dawes backing the likes of Lucinda Williams, Kris Kristofferson and Jackson Browne who paid tribute to Glen in the form of covers.  Glen's band was marvelous featuring his talented kids; his long-time keyboard player, T.J. Kuenster; and Harry Nilsson's kid Keith on bass. A real family affair. Seeing Glen is tragic and uplifting simultaneously. He is suffering a decline due to Alzheimer's; and is the first major figure to battle it in public by continuing to do what he does: entertain. It is an act of bravery and a testament to God's Grace and the gifts He's seen fit to give Mr. Campbell. T

On The Rebound

Hey soul mates, that's the title of my new album. After deliberation and a little creative consultation with people close to the project, I have selected On The Rebound as the name of this new musical collection. The new title track will be released as a single on the International Pop Overthrow compilation CD. It will be given away for free with admission at the IPO Los Angeles shows. Just one more compelling reason to attend my matinee, 4 PM Saturday July 28 @ Fais Do Do. Check out my updated website and see the graphic art that will adorn the CD. Ah, herringbone. Style points my friends. Gotta dress cute. Gotta get your nights right. This will be the album for it. If you need to see me perform prior to IPO, and you do, I will be doing one cover song at the Universal super-hootenanny called LuvJam, 9 PM Tuesday June 26 at Saddle Ranch on the CityWalk. Free show! Y'all come. Tonight, I had another listen through the entire disc with my songwriting partner Bryan Farrar

Kings & Queens

Hey Soul Mates, it has been a month since my last official post and as you might guess a lot has happened. In case you didn't follow the photo-journaling on facebook or my tweets. Here's the rundown. The trip to the UK was fruitful and fun. I performed four times. Thrice in Liverpool, including the historic Cavern Club; once in London at the packed Notting Hill Arts Club. The shows were a riot. Just me and my guitar. I got the crowd to sing a long with a few choice covers (Bowie's "Let's Dance;" Bee Gees' "I've Gotta Get A Message To You;" Temptations' "I Wish It Would Rain") that peppered the sets. The new material went over well, especially "Huckleberry Finn," "On The Rebound," and the first single from my new CD, "Your Majestic Rejection." Among other highlights, we saw the Queen, HRH Elizabeth II at the Albert Dock. I was recipient of the royal wave! We went to the Scottish Highlands to see

No Sleep 'Til Liverpool

Alright. Just wrapped up a nice long practice session. The set for IPO Liverpool is firming up. I have worked up acoustic versions of a few more of my new songs. I'm especially looking forward to debuting "On The Rebound" at the Cavern Club. It is one of my new collaborations with Bryan Farrar. Plus I took a crack at a couple of covers that I have never heard performed live; one that I don't even know that the original artist has ever played in person. Covers are a real luxury at IPO sets. So many great acts, there is limited time to get your musical point across. I will be sticking with the hits, but perhaps you'll find me on Mathew St. I'm getting really excited about performing in the UK for the first time in four years. More exciting: getting to see familiar faces in the audience. For those of you in the UK, I will be toting along copies of A Talent For Loving and the exclusive new single "Your Majestic Rejection," for your listening pleasure.

"Your Majestic Rejection" Is Unleashed

The lead single Your Majestic Rejection from my new LP So Sophisticated has taken to the internet. This is my new R&B waltz torch song.  And I just love the performances on this cut.  The track features an all-star lineup of performers: DJ Bonebrake (drums); Larry O. Williams (sax solo); Rahmlee Michael Davis (trumpet); Evie Sands & Teresa Cowles (backing vocals); and producer Adam Marsland (piano, organ and guitars).   I promised that you would hear new music beginning April 24 and I am very excited to share it. It was a bit of a challenge, but I put together a lyric-only video to accompany the recording; an homage, of sorts. However, I anticipate producing a full concept video for the song shortly. In the meantime, pretend you still listen to radio and the visual element is still in your own imagination. Your Majestic Rejection was part of my set on Sunday at the Charleston in Santa Monica. The show was a blast in a new upscale venue. I enjoy the challenge of building d

Sophisticated & Solo Show 1

Hey Soul Mates, thanks again to everyone who came out for the opening night of the Sophisticated & Solo tour. The show at the Good Hurt was a lot of fun. Hard to see from the stage, but I could hear all of you singing along to the hits. I'm looking forward to introducing more of the new material and popping in some fun covers in the upcoming shows, including this Sunday April 22. Here's the set list from the 12 April Show at the Good Hurt: Everything My Heart Desires Our Love Is Known By Name (debut) Huckleberry Finn Papa's Got A Brand New Bag (James Brown) A Talent For Loving Your Majestic Rejection Let's Dance (David Bowie) Done Lost My Mind Details for the next show: I am part of a full-night's entertainment from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM. I will be doing a 25 minute set. On the bill with friends, Jaway and Rahe. Sunday April 22 The Charleston 2460 Wilshire Blvd. Santa Monica, CA 1.310.828.2115

"Up All Night" Loses Its Mind

Hey y'all. A recent episode of Up All Night  (2.9.2012) features my song Done Lost My Mind . It is their Valentines' day show entitled "Day After Valentine's Day." You will hear the song playing on the stereo during the dinner date gone wrong between Maya Rudolph and Jason Lee. Watch it on HULU or download it via iTunes by following the link above. TV14. Honestly. Peace

Prometheus. Not A Musical.

If you've been following my recent threads on facebook, you know I have started obsessing over the release of the trailers for an upcoming sci-fi film. This summer, Prometheus arrives in theatres. I have had recurring nightmares about this movie for 30 years. How? Well, in case you haven't heard, Prometheus is the (maybe) prequel to Ridley Scott's 1979 gothic masterwork Alien . It was a brilliant character study and scary as hell for taking place in well-lit spaces. From the first time I saw Sigourney Weaver, H.R. Giger's titular monstrosity and the Space Jockey, my imagination was captured. The soundtrack featured Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 2 , which the local classical station played with some deliciously creepy frequency; along with the evocative, skin-crawling score by Jerry Goldsmith. The sequel, James Cameron's Aliens was a worthy one with as much black humor as but more action than the first. However, the intense bug hunt did little to build on the

International & Sophisticated

The album is nearly completed. One more mixing session before we ship the tracks off for mastering. Still looking at a May release and now a late April release for the first single! Earlier this month, I announced via MySpace and facebook that I will be taking the Sophisticated & Solo show to the UK for the International Pop Overthrow Music Festival in Liverpool for the third time. This is the 10th Annual IPO/Liverpool at the Cavern Club and my first time since 2008. So, I am very excited to perform in Britain again and to reconnect with my loyal fan base there. A few more dates will be added; but for now, mark your calendars. Wednesday 16 May @ 10 PM Cavern Club, 10 Mathew St., Liverpool, UK Thursday, 17 May @ 10 PM The Cavern Pub, 5 Mathew St., Liverpool, UK Cheers and Soul!

Sophisticated & Solo

I am pleased to announce the first official date for my Sophisticated and Solo acoustic series. These shows will feature hits from A Talent For Loving , debuts of new songs from my upcoming release So Sophisticated and some surprise cover songs. Don't miss these shows. Dress cute! The first show will be 8 PM, Thursday, April 12, 2012 at the Good Hurt. 12249 Venice Blvd. West Los Angeles. 90066. The set will run about 30 minutes and this venue does start on time. I have played the Good Hurt many times in the past and it is always a fun venue. Cover is $5. The club is 21+. Alright, now watch out for more dates to be announced; including shows in the United Kingdom in May. Peace!

No Monkeeing Around

Lots of news this week. I received the proofs from my photo shoot for my LP cover taken by Hendershotts photography. I am very excited to get to work on the design for the cover this weekend. Not to mention sharing new pix on my website, myspace, facebook, etc. Which also means revamping my current website, so watch that space, too. We are a song or two away from being done with the mixes for the album. Producer Adam Marsland is focusing on the album closer, A Miracle Is On The Way . It's a blast of 1978 in all the best ways. I am still aiming to release the lead single at the end of the month, beginning of April. I was saddened by the passing of Davy Jones from the Monkees. However, it seems he was on tour at the time. A true performer. I am an apologist for the Monkees. Everyone mentions Daydream Believer , but my favorite lead vocals by Davy were Valleri, She Hangs Out, Star Collector and the super-breathy ballad Forget That Girl. Revisit them and hear a bona fide pop singer at

Pretty Sophisticated Pictures

In a word: COLD! In another word: FRESH! The preliminary results of the photo session are just that. I have just unpacked all of my clothes after returning home from the afternoon/evening photo shoot for my album cover. Adam Hendershott and his team were fantastic. I have the highest regard for the Hendershott's work, so check them out. We shot most of the session in their studio before venturing into the NOHO Arts district to represent. A nice winter day here in Southern California. A perfect sunset, too. Artist Vio Meyners did my hair and makeup. I will tell you this, never again will I do an album cover without the benefit of hair and makeup. Viva Vio! She has already posted a photo taken by Adam that I said could be a still from a lost Alfred Hitchcock technicolor thriller. She's the Kim Novak femme fatale applying "makeup." I'm the unsuspecting Gregory Peck fall guy in over his head. There are so many cool photos to select from. Some really different moods

That's A Wrap!

Monday, on King Day, I had my final recording session at Karma Frog. It was a wild adventure making this album. There is still mixing (which my producer Adam Marsland is also handling) and mastering to go. But here's a recap of what we hath wrought. The session focused on backing vocals and a little ad libbed spice. We polished off five tracks with some wild results. Vocalist Teresa Cowles joined us midway through the day so that we could manage some live three part harmonies; as well as a poignant counterpoint duet on Huckleberry Finn . One of my favorite moments of the entire deal, sitting right next to Lady T in the studio to put down that vocal. I am persistently moved by that song each time I hear it. I had been joking about Eddie Murphy's riff on Michael Jackson crying in the studio. Of course, then I get misty listening to the playback. Oh, irony. Prior to that Adam gave me a little stage direction and room to create and I invented some new scat vocal parts for the brid

Hendershotts Across The Bow

Tonight, I had a great collaborative meeting with Adam and Sylvia Hendershott who will be photographing the album cover for So Sophisticated . I am excited to be working with such artistic people. The project is motoring along nicely. We listened through parts of the new record; rapped about some favorite album artwork; drank some Folger's. I made a wisecrack about doing an album cover using only Instagram and Adam H. snapped a shot that is straight-up David Ruffin . Brilliant. Ha ha. Not only did we discuss the LP cover and what we want to accomplish, we began preliminary talks for a music video to coincide with the album release. Several different groups have approached me about videos; I look forward to working with all of you. Anyway, I am preparing for a March release at this point; just to make sure all facets are joined and shiny. This morning, I got to hear an early mix of "Saffron Dancer" and the horns! Oh, my. In a word: COLD! The horns come blasting through. A

Top 10 of 2011

The holidays were a wonderful time for me. I hope they were for you. Lots of blessings and fun events going on at church and the studio. That's right. During the last two weeks of the year, I finally got the horns laid down for the album. Larry O. Williams (Gap Band) and Rahmlee Davis (Phenix Horns; Earth, Wind & Fire) provided tenor sax and trumpet, respectively. It was a true honor to work with them and even more of a thrill to hear their playing on my own compositions. Our next and final recording session at Karma Frog is scheduled for King Day, Jan. 16. We will be wrapping up the background vocals. Then it is all down to mixing and mastering. Then I will be able to concentrate on artwork and the other promotional material to go along with the album. I am sure that this will be my favorite record of the Dozens as my friends and I are calling 2012. Of course, how can I let the year begin without a recap of my favorite recordings from 2011? Well, here goes; a combo of LPs and
